Happy in -14 weather!!!!

I have to travel to Olean NY for business and took the 85 300sd purchased in November. All I did to it was change the oil to 15w-40, check belts and hoses, put 4 studded snow tires on it and off I went. 254,044 on the odometer. On my trips to NY state the weather plays games, so I took an extra battery, 2 gal of kerosene to cut the fuel, standard jumper cables, blanket, all the cold weather toys.. So,

I awoke this to the weather channel saying it was currently 2 degrees F in Olean. Well, I was real eager to see how the 'Jersey car' as my wife named it would do. I got in, the little dash temp indicator said -26 degrees C. I thought that was about zero (I'm good with C to F above zero, but below that I have no clue!). Tried glow plugs 2x and not much. tried glowing it 3x then cranked as the engine went from 2 cylinders up to the required 5 in about 1.5 minutes. (I knew it was going to start on the car battery because Jersey car KNEW I had a charged spare in the trunk.)

After a warm up for about 2 minutes off I went. bank temp gauge said -10 F and minus 22 C.!!!

Went to NAPA for a air filter at 0730 and the guy was answering the phone with people asking about "diesel 911" a product that helps thaw waxy fuel. He heard my Diesel idling outside and inquired how it went this am. Told him it went well, and that the car knew I had a back up battery just in case. We had a good laugh, got my filter, and the phone rings again, and as I head out the door, I could hear him, "Yes, we have diesel 911, about 3 cases now..."

All is well...

Wow, and I was impressed when the SD started at 0F.

That's severe cold. I'd have brought my extension cord and found an outlet somewhere around that hotel.........even if I had to run the cord to my own hotel room........through the window..........which I've done before.

Whoa. On 15W40, no less.

Quite impressive, indeed.

I gotta take my D up north at least 1 time to see how she would handle sub zero temps .

It was down in the low 50's this morning and even then she still started right up.

Of course I'll definetly have to get the heater working again.....
