Engine Stands
 

I have searched around on this forum and others for a bit but didnt come up with anything. I was curious as to what what kind of engine stands you guys use and if there any particular good ones I should look at. This is for a 617 but I guess that they are universal.

I have a 616 sitting on a $50 engine stand that I purchased at our local discount store, I think its equivelent in the US would be harbour freight.

Make sure it is rated for 1000lbs or more and avoid ones with only three wheels.

Yeah I was definatly going to purchase one rated for at least 1,000 I just wanted to make sure there werent anyones that I should look out for.

The only problem is that the mounting base is too wide. I had to buy extra bolts and rig it to be able to mount it directly to the block.
If it were to be mounted on the bellhousing plate, it would be the correct size. But I had the plate off and I don't think you can mount it to the plate safely.

EDIT: I wish I had a better picture of the mounting base setup on my 617.952

a 616 4 cyl may be ok on a 50.00 engine stand, but I would not put a 617 on anything that cheap. I like the ones with WIDE feet and 4 casters. the steel wheels are cheaper, but they do hold up well. the urethane wheels will roll over stuff on the floor better.

Check craigslist and yard sales. There are countless engine stands taking up space in garages. The fellow I got my engine stand from was thrilled that I took it off his hands. I was similarly thrilled that someone took it a couple days after I was done with it.

This is likely to be a dumb question but how do you attach the stand? Is it through bell housing bolt holes?

For my 617, I connected it to the four bolts holes where the Bellhousing plate attaches to on back of the engine block (you need to remove the plate first). I wish I had a picture of it but I don't.

I have used a few engine stands much like the ones pictured above. The only difference is that you will need some long metric bolts from the hardware store. In fact there is a 616 on one of my engine stands as we speak.

What kind of bolts should I pick up? Is there a certain length/size?

I also have a couple of the harbor freight stands. Definitely basic, but they are doing the job.

The bell housing bolts are 17mm, I just bought some that were around 125mm long, iirc.

So any type of bolt will work? Are there any weight restrictions I should worry about like if a certain bolt can only have like 300 pounds on it?

metric bolts have strength ratings cast/stamped onto the head, you'll see a pair of numbers like 5.8, 8.8, 10.9, 12.2. i'm sure the experts here can tell you exactly what the tensile strength of each is, but i'll tell you that from practical experience, the bolts i bought to use with my stands are 8.8.
