Sound deadening in the Engine

Is there anything that can be applied to the engine compartment to quite a bit the noise of my 300SD. One of my friends has a '82 300D turbodiesel and it is much quieter.

Any hints?

Raf

Replace the insulation on the inner hood lid. Makes a huge difference.

What he said. Used this in the 240D owned by my girlfriend. It had none when we got it. Daylight/dark difference. Instead of the engine running inside what sounded like a lunchbox, now it's more of a dull roar.

I never noticed any difference when I put new insulation (the old was completely gone) in my W123 but I figure much of the sound escapes underneath.

My wife's '87 is another matter. The belly pans should trap some of the sound. I'm really interested is seeing how much quieter it gets when it finally warms up and dries off enough so I can install the insulation that currently is covering the spare bed. I'll probably even drag out my sound level meter and make some measurements.

RA - New hood pad installed jul06. I agree much the sounds comes from underneath and the cavernous hood space vs. 300d may make the difference. Interesting what are these belly pans and to they make them for w126 '83 300SD? A concern though is will it trap the heat making the drivetrain run hotter?

Thanks all- Raf

Add around 5% of fresh vegetable oil in your diesel. It won't harm your car and it will quieten it by quite a bit.

Check the condition of the plastic undertrays, they should be lined with absorbant foam - not having that will make the car much louder.

Straight pipe exhaust, or get a cherry bomb, blast out the fiberglass, then it will be straight pipe, but look like a glass pack...

a pair of 16" Woofers? which car do you want louder? one of those "cone" air filter kits seem to really bring up the noise level. you could also take out the windows, that will make it pretty loud in your cabin.

This time of year use canola oil. It stays liquid down to 0F. Better yet, use some biodiesel made from canola oil. It is good down to -14F.

I looked at a 1987 300D two weeks ago. The owner asked why mine was so much quieter than his. I was running about 50% biodiesel. (To give the biodiesel even more credit, I don't have the hood pad installed. He did, and my car was still much quieter than his.)

Do you have pictures, because I do not see these on the underside or side walls of the inner fenders in the engine bay? where can these be sourced?

thx - Raf

Early 80's models did not have belly pans.

They showed up in the late 80's; from the mid 90's most have had engine and also trans pans.

I put in new homemade hood pad, that did sem to help....but it was still too loud for me.

I had a large chunk of 3/4" to 1" thick foam rubber....I cut that up and put under the carpet like a pad...under the seats...and stuffed the rear hatch full! THAT make it much BETTER!

And I make a new "gasket" for the hole where the steering wheel column comes through the fire wall....used this aluminum tar backed roof patching material and cut to suit.
