valve adjustment cluster situation! HELP!

I recently bought the valve adjustment kit from Mercedes source that included the bent wrenches, instruction book, and feeler gauge. I have never done a valve adjust before but I have removed engines from cars and done many other repairs myself, so I assumed that I could knock it out without to much trouble. I started work on my 80 300SD over the weekend and mistakenly adjusted the first 5 valves so the feeler gauges would fit between the adjusting nut and the bottom of the rocker arm. Today I was glancing in an old Mercedes book and saw a diagram that said to put the feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the cam shaft base. D’oh! After some cursing I returned to the car and turned the socket wrench on the crank so the lobe over the first valve was pointing up. I then slid the feeler gauge into the proper place and had no clearance. I still have a gap between the adjusting nut and the bottom of the rocker arm. My question is why isn’t the rocker arm resting against the adjusting nut? How do I adjust the valves now? I’m completely lost. Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks
