What is this thingymabobler.....

I was taking some pictures on my 82's engine before I get to undoing things so I would know where everything goes by time I get done repairing the trans. I came across a sensor of some sort located on the timing indicator bracket for the crank pulley. It goes to a large round plug on the left fender apron. This car has cruise in it, so would I be correct in guessing it is an engine speed sensor for the cruise?

That would be the speed sensor for the tachometer. (MB calls it the TDC sensor.)

My tach amp connection looks different, yet the sensors are in the same locations, crank and inner fender. Dash may have been swapped out? Hard to tell. Tach is in same face as clock. If you pull the cluster and find a plug that is not plugged in, maybe so. My '82 240 manual did not have a tach, or those connections, if I remember correctly. My '82 300DT automatic does have a tach, yet different amp set up. PM me for photos.

That looked like a 240D engine, which doesnt have a tach but it does have the tach sensor, MB can use it for diagnostic purposes, It doesnt do anything on a 240D. However if you had a cluster and an tach amp from a 300, then you could hook up a tach.

the connection for the cruise is on the back of the speedo cluster.
