I drained the 240D manual when I first got the car. About 1/3 of what came out was water.
![]() ![]() ![]() I put in Redline MTL and have not checked it since. Guess I ought to do that pretty soon. I think if I was going to do a 500 mile flush, I would use ATF Type A. (Pilot Truck Stops sells it around here.)

You are welcome! You might know this already, but you also need a fluid transfer pump for both the tranny and the diff, since there is not enough room up there to pour in from a bottle... I got mine from pepboys ($7.50, a "powerbuilt"), which is one of the cheapest and apparently one of the sturdiest and does the job quite adequately.

After much reading of previous threads, I concluded that just about any oily-type liquid would work in a 240D's manual transmission, at least for a while, and that 90W was probably not a good idea for long-term use. The other threads mainly boiled down to Redline, a couple different grades of engine oil, and ATF. Out of curiosity, I called Mercedes Benz of Reno about an hour ago and asked what they suggest. The parts guy didn't know, so he went and asked the techs. He came back and told me to use 90W gear oil. Then about three minutes later he called back and said that he had told me wrong and that I should use Dexron III (aka regular cherry juice).
Since I don't know when my manual trans oil was last changed (though I suspect it was in 1993), I'm going to change it in the near future, and I will be using cherry juice.

As long as it meets DexIII standards.

I have been running on 10W-30 Mobile-1 engine oil for a couple of months - It helped my 1-2 shift alot. May try the redline next time. I went with 10W-30 'cause it's what the manual and FSM for my (1980) recommends.

You should find Jim Smith's post about this...
some fluids eat up the synchronizers.... bummer.. I got some Redline MTL for mine....not easy to find ... the local VW shop carried it.... The factory ' bent wrench' ( not to be confused with the bent wrenches for the valve adjusting ) is made to do this job....and the engine oil drain plug and 3rd member... |
