HOw Do you replace the Turbo Oil Drain Gasket?
 

Hi there!!


I was wondering, how exactly do you replace the Turbo oil drain gaskets.

I've searched around, and have only found vague answers.

My Dad plans to cut the tube in half, replace the seals, and then jp weld the tube back together.

Im not sure how that would hold up.


Anyways, any advice or opinion would be appreciated.

I would drop the oil pan before cutting the tube in half.

I remember reading about someone cutting it out and replacing the tube with a hydraulic hose. I wonder how that held up?

Not so vague, you just need to search a little better. This one goes back to '05.

Don't cut it! I did and it was a mistake and a pain to find new parts. To get it apart you need to remove the two bolts that hold the top drain tube to the turbo. Then press the lower section down (it should move about 1/2 an inch before it bottoms out. Now twist and push up on the upper section until it is wedged up against the exhaust manifold. With the upper tube up as far as you can get it and the lower tube down as far as you can get it you should (barely) be able to remove the upper tube.

To get the bottom tube out you will probably have to destroy the old seal.

Remember you need an O ring for the top AND bottom of the lower tube. Use some grease to help you slide everything back together on reassembly.

That was me, and it didn't work out. The 3/4" hydraulic hose was just a hair too tight to slide over the drain tube easily. I replaced the seals correctly and it does not leak a drop now.

It can be done!
 

Yup, it really can. Just like the line above describes. But it is a struggle. Bajaman helped me (did it really) at Christmas a year ago and I really appreaciated what he did. I mostly watched, and it is a mean job. I would suggest that before you start you have new seals, ("O" rings) and a gasket for the upper connection and a new metal tube. The one on my 300 D was pretty beatup when we got it out. And the cost is pretty cheap. You definetly don't want to have to do a re-do!

I did that as well, but it was only because my VNT turbo's drain flange was not compatible.

How's it holding up? Any leaks?

Hasn't leaked a drop.
