Valve adjustment intervals on a 617?

How often do you adjust the valve clearance on your 617 turbo?

15kmiles is way too often. I try to do it at 60kmiles, but have gone as long as 100kmiles without any problem.

I'm hearing yearly as a winter tune up... which would be about 15k for me. I know mine go out of spec much faster than every 60k.

Then why did you ask if your mind was already made up?

You just have all the answers, don't you. I guess I'll quit buying service manuals on any cars that I purchase in the future.

But if you actually read, you'll see that he asked a different question than you imply above. And in fact, you answered it!

How often do YOU adjust the valve clearance. Not how often should I adjust.

Why would he care what someone else did IF he knew what was required? Is he a lemming?

I can't answer that question, as I don't have any way to know his motivations. Perhaps he will, but as far as I can tell, he doesn't owe you an answer.

No nearby cliffs. I guess that makes me a kamikaze hampster.

Made up no, but I know I can't match your 60k.

Actually I hadn't looked up the spec. But then what the spec is and what actual owners have found to be necessary 25 years later don't always match. I know I do a lot more vacuum leak and oil leak hunting than any engineer would have thought.

Go bother people somewheres else.

Those of us who wish to maintain our Mercedes-Benzes as opposed to abusing them will continue to adjust the valves every 12k and to change the oil somewhere in the 3-7k miles range.

What, pray tell, is your point?

My point was clearly stated in the post. Go ahead and waste your time. I don't care.

I suppose you could argue that adjusting the valves is only necessary when the car will no longer run. But like most people here I like to adjust them at the first sign, rather than only when absolutely necessary.

I did the plugs and points on my Mustang the same way. As soon as my fuel mileage dropped from 17.4 to 16.9 I cleaned and gapped the plugs and points. I could have gone longer, but I liked the extra economy and power from being just right.

And every time I've adjusted valves (for myself and for customer's cars) at 12k, I've found at least one tight valve. TIGHT VALVES ARE BAD. PROPER CLEARANCE=GOOD. Yes, my 300SD still started and ran with 50k since its last adjustment (when i bought it) but it ran much better when SET TO SPEC!
