Question 240D Getting 34MPG ?

So i finally got my 81 240D going and drove it for 2 weeks and topped off the tank. i hand calculated the milage and came up with 34 MPG this sounds wrong because it smokes and stumbles real bad at idle when cold . it had 136000 on the OD when i got it but the owner before me said its been that way since he owned it. so i figured this thing was on its last leg but i guess not.

oh and the first tank of fuel had 2 Gallons of filtered WVO and 1 Gallon of filtered 15-40 WMO.

It'll take a while before you get a fairly reliable mpg reading. I'be been tracking mine for a year now and I was getting consistent 31.5 mpg before November and 28.5 since.

first mileage

Just wait. I got really great mileage in the beginning with my 240D. I was driving it gently and just really babying it. Then as I got tired of being passed or tailgated I started to just put my foot into it. Now I get a pretty solid 25 city and I'm happy with that. Plus, the car is alot more fun to drive now. I think I started to really drive it aggressively after reading an eloquent post on how to drive a 240D by 240Dog.

If it gets 34, the odometer is inaccurate.

Does it have correct size tires?

Could you link me to that particular thread by "240Dog"? I would like to read his comments, but when I do a search on his name, WOW, he has so many he commented in, It would take hours to find the right one!(lol)

This area has been a bone of contention for some time. Most seem to get somewhere around 25. Some a little higher and some a little lower.
I still would like the defiinative answer why some 240ds seem quicker than others as well.
My red 240d seemed to get about 25 on its long journey home once I remember in the winter. Again accuracy of this was not certain. I also have one that seems better all around but it is not proven either.
Driving habits are going to impact it to some degree. Most important is once you are sure of your speedometer keep carful records over say ten tanks of fuel to quash any filling variables.

I've been getting 28mpg (sometimes less) on my 240. I also drive it like I stole it.

Not the exact one I was looking for but a good example of his philosophy regarding the 240D. Check out post 15.

I thought 240D's were rated at no more than 27mpg factory? Somewhere in there?

Whenever I drive my friend's 240D (stick) it is pretty much "pedal to the metal" the entire time.

I've been getting between 26 and 27.5 in the Squash. All city driving. Wonder what it will get when the AC is fixed. And have LESS power......
The first several tank fulls I got in the wagon were 28mpg, but that has since dropped to a consistent 23-25....

I believe it. My old 240D had the stock 175 tires and would return 32 or so on road-trips.
