Waste gate adjustment, not really seeing what I was hoping for.

I've driven 2 617 Turbos that definitley had get up and go. Once was a euro wagon and the other was a SD. ONce the boost kicked in on th euro it was almost uncontrollable. I am wondering if the 2.88 rear diff is just preventing me from seeing any of the fun? I am getting 10PSI around town now, 11 on the highway WOT. I still havent checked IP timing or chain stretch or had the injectors pop tested. I bought a Voodoo MBC and plan on installing it with the hopes of seeing some wee factor. Any other suggestions? I bet with enough of a straight away I bet I could hit 120 though. Might have to give that a spin with GPS one day.

Where are you measuring the boost? If it's upwind of the overboost switchover valve, it could be that that's clogged and you're not getting the signal to the ALDA to increase fuel and deliver the full effect. Just a thought.

overboost removed. measured at arv nipple on alda as far down wind as it gets right? I did just run out and turn out alda all the way. a little bit better but certainly not the woosh I saw on the euro wagon. time to shim or remove alda? for the life of me I cant get that thing off. cant find anything skinny enough. in standard size what is the size of the nut and locking nut under the alda? this is an 85 fed (84 cali) any guesses on the ALDA being of a different variety than previous? Man I really wish I had bought that euro wagon. It was actually DANGEROUS it was so spunky!

This may be a dumb question, but do you have the EGR corked? I know one thing that makes euros more spritely than our US versions is the lack of emissions crap. I think the euro 617s had more horsepower than the us versions, but someone else could confirm that. Still, I wouldn't think the difference would be that noticeable if everything were in order.

The euro pumps are different interally especially the M pump. That wagon may have had one I don't remember any more. The EGR has a metal plate in the middle. Perhaps I should add some gasket sealer. I do think its a fuel issue at this point as at 7psi I had lots of black smoke, now I appear to have none. Backing the ALDA out all the way DID make a difference.

winmutt,

I don't have any help for your problem, but was wondering which way you oriented your voodoo boost controller? I'm assuming you spliced it into the line to the wastegate?

heres a thought. I think this is the case with my car, but im not sure. My valves are very tight, haven't been done for like 40k miles. I have been meaning to do them, but havent had time. COuld the tight valves be bypassing boost because I have my wastegate adjusted ALL the way and I can still only get like 10 PSI. Reason that I suspect the valves is that when its at the 10 PSI the needle shivers.

Any ideas?

I just adjusted my valves and have boost set at 12psi. Needle shiver has nothing to do with anything other than pressure differential in the tubing. Mine shudders too;). If one were able to put liquid in the gauge/line, I believe it would virtually eliminate needle shudder due to a dampening effect. I have searched this and other diesel truck forums and everyone seems to confirm that - even with the more expensive boost gauges.
