Question dead dash lights

I just got my 1976 240d w115 rolling it was a basket case. It came in boxes. I can't get the Instrument lights to work. Fuse is good, so I pop out the speedo cluster and these wires(black) on a long banana clip are popping off can't tell what goes where?. The bulbs look good and all are out. These black wires have like a fiber glass core. I think it might be a ground fusable link?. After screwing around with these black wires I use to get the battery and brake warning lights to come on when I turned the key. Now I don't?. Thanks for the help.

Those sound like fiber optic wires that light up center dash console heat lever system if properly plugged in, they got nothing to do with electrics. 9 of ten dash light problems are dial switch related, coupled to the trip odometer reset. Otherwise try running a grounding wire from the back of speedometer metal to somewhere on the chassis behind the dash.

dead dash lights

Thanks
I was totally at a loss. Didn't have a clue how to proceed. I thought it might be fiber optics, but 1976? I wasn't sure. Plus the fibers are so fine I thought they would be thicker.
If it the adjustable switch, can you bypass it?
p.s. Is that a pit bull dog? I have one. The best dogs I ever had. Mercs and pits!!!!
