What does diesel purge do?
I saw the thread about diesel purge, but I never got a clear answer on this. What does diesel purge do? There's some stuff you put in your tank to help clean the injectors. Is this the same stuff?

no, you put it directly into the Injector pump bypassing the fuel tank.
it cleans out the injectors, and the prechambers, and the piston/combustion chambers to a certain extent. generally good stuff. physically rebuilding the items is better, but MUCH more expensive and timeconsuming. John looky here: http://dieselgiant.com/injectorcleaning.htm |
It's snake oil
It is a harmless snake oil, won't hurt, won't help. Does have two other benefits. It makes the owner feel real good and of course the retailer loves you spending very much.

Ditto what John replied.....
Diesel Kleen is the less potent stuff that you add to your fuel tank on occassion. Its more of a preventative lite cleaning additive and does not do as thorough a job as the Diesel Purge that you run directly through your IP and Injectors. Running the vehicle on a tank of commercial Biodiesel will also do a very good job of cleaning and lubricating. Always make sure you have an extra fuel filter in case they clog up. |
I checked all 6 injectors for $70 which includes disassembling one and cleaning it. If you can get the tools, it is much better. think about this. all 10 times you use the DP, can you be sure that you have done enough? I took the injectors out at 100K and I KNOW I have done it right.

My car has been running kinda sluggish lately so I opted to do a diesel purge before I change my fuel filters soon, just to see if it will make a difference. The last time I did it it really helped, and I was good for over 30k. The purge is cheap, if it doesn't work I will look into having my injectors rebuilt with bosio nozzles sometime in the next couple months. I ordered 4 cans of the stuff from a website selling it for $5.47 a can, not bad at all. I've only done it once before over 2.5 years ago, and it DID help, so maybe it will again. I'm going to do run two cans, then change both filters. We'll see. :D
|
My question is this. Lets say it does clean stuff out. How do you know it cleaned out ALL the junk and not part of it. By the time you do it every 30K, isn't it better labor wise for me to do it all at say 100K and know what the pressure and pattern is instead of guessing what it is after all the cost and work?

actually, the DP will not fix injector problems that require cleaning, but it will help some with injector problems, but what it does that BRAND NEW injectors will not fix is it cleans out the prechambers, and the combustion chambers. if you want to just rebuild the injectors, put some marvel mystery oil in the pc's and let it settle for a day or so, then flush some pb blaster or WD-40 through with the injectors out, crank over the motor and this will make a really poor running car run really well.
or just dump in the DP and let it do it's magic for less work. John |

My inj's (in the same model car/engine as yours) are doing fine at 202K; I've spent $25/200k on DP to date; you've spent $70/100K testing and have already had to have one rebuilt. DP helps inj's that exhibit a marginal spray pattern. Is not a cure all by any means but is a reasonable PM product IMO. Mind you, I'm not against testing and in fact have a pop tester of my own and will test mine in the near future, just for fun. |
Lubro Moly vs Liqui Moly
One web site maintains that the latter is simply a new name for the former. But, I have seen many other locations that list Lubro Moly products for sale. Is there a difference?

what chemicals are in the stuff???

Lubri Molly or STP or other?
I had the same question someone posted above. I wondered if the Lubri Molly product that you add in your tank (not the stuff for direct clean into the injectors), was any better than the STP or other stuff sold at Auto Zone.

The thing is, my car runs quite smoothly, its just a little down on power...probably clogged filters (they're 30k old) but I am doing a purge just in case to clean out the prechambers and such a little bit before I replace the filters. My car can still hit 113mph flat out, so its not "running poorly" or anything. Its interesting to hear how smooth it runs with the diesel purge too. :D

I've mentioned this previously in another thread.
It seems Marvel Mystery Oil run at full concentration will produce the same cleansing effect of Diesel Purge. Plus, it is far cheaper at 3.xx per qt. Am I the only one who has tried this? |
You've run mystery oil at full concentration? Can you do that? I'd be willing to try it....
|
Would pulling the injectors and letting them sit overnight in Kerosene, gas or MMO help? I think I might try this before poptesting and nozzles.
|
I just canceled my diesel purge order at ipex....and am heading to autozone for a couple bottles of MMO...gotta see how it handles it.... :D :D I'll report back in a little while.
|
Interesting........I have always used Marvel Mystery Oil as a diesel and gasoline additive on my cars but never thought to try it as a purge.
Worth a try! |

Only way to know is to do a before and after test. SOTP dyno is not the best. |
I ran a 32oz bottle through the system, the fuel in the bottle that was left over was quite dirty! It runs VERY well on that stuff, rev'ing it up produced quite a bit of smoke for a while, then it cleared up. I then changed the ancient filters, had to crank it to prime it, since my primer pump squirted fuel all over the ground...looks like thats my next repair. :dizzy2: :o But it runs AWESOME now. Big difference in smoke and power. Way less smoke, way more power, it throws me back into my seat again on take off! :D :D I am very pleased with the results! Now I have to wait a day though, I had to apply sealer around the stupid bolt that holds the secondary filter on, because mine oozes fuel without it.
On a sad note, my Kenwood radio died. Its the type with the revolving faceplate, it failed. siiiigh. :o |
What does DP do? Not much IMHO. But others seem to have gotten good results.
|
I don't know if it was the MMO I ran through, or the new fuel filters, perhaps both, but my W126 surely has more force traveling through the drive line now than it did before. :D :D And I am very pleased. $3.49 purge, can't beat that!
Maybe next time I'll brew up a concoction of MMO, Redline Catalyst, and DieselKleen and mix them all together and run it on that. :dizzy2: :D Would be interesting to see what happened. ;) :D |
Ran a couple cans of DP through my 602 while trying to diagnose my sluggishness problem. Gave me a slight bit more power, barely noticeable. It did quiet the engine down quite a bit...had a little bit of nailing that went away. Nice and regular sewing-machine quality clack coming out of my 602 now :nice:.
I put a jar under the hood and ran some "fuel injection hose" from Shucks that happened to be the perfect diameter. Cheap too. Secured the jar with tape so it wouldn't fall over while driving around. Drove around the neighborhood flooring it to redline in first the whole time. Ran through two cans. |
can't find diesel purge locally , willing to try something new
I want to do a diesel purge on my 240D before I head off to Florida next week.:sunny: :sunny: I'll be traveling from western New York through the mountains of Pa ,Wv and Va. so I'll need every bit of extra power I can get ( at least its the man 4 spd). I would like to take my 300D, but have not completed my wvo conversion. I've read about doing a purge with Sea Foam and canola oil, Marvel Mystery Oil, my thought was to due a purge using Sea Foam and biodiesel or MMO and bio. I would use DP if I could get it locally but no time to order it in 3 days. I will be running 100% bio with the trunk packed with cubies of bio to offset the amount of petro diesel that I would have to buy . Can anybody along this route give me some info on where I can buy bio on the way down or on the return trip? :D thanks in advance mark

I just replaced my nozzles with Bosio nozzles from Diesel Giant. Here are a couple of observations:
1) One of the heat-shields had a *thick* layer of carbon that was blocking 90% of the hole. It was so tough that I had to chip it out with a screwdriver. DP wouldn't touch something like that. 2) The old nozzles were badly carbonized. I have been soaking them in Gunk carb dip for the last 8 hours, and just checked on them - it hasn't even touched the carbon. It won't even scrape off with a screwdriver yet. 3) The new nozzles and heatshields, combined with a thorough cleaning of the injector bodies, has completely fixed rough idle, hard-starts, and start/idle smoke. The car runs so smooth now that I can't even believe an hour of work made such a dramatic difference. In my opinion, I woudn't waste time with additives and cleaners. As long as you're getting dirty, just go ahead and clean the parts. BTW, I did run DP through the system when I first got the car. Lots of smoke and black liquid, but no long-term change. YMMV, I guess... |
