'81 300CD transmission slippage fixed!!! pics

So, today I finally purchased my mityvac. Dont know how I have driven the car for 2 weeks without it! I was able to finally get some real test data on my car. Went straight to the vacuum hose to the tranny, popped it off, plugged up the mityvac and it read 20 in. The second I pulled the throttle it dropped to 15 then rose right back up to 20 while I was pulling on the throttle(this is under the hood, mind you). I know from reading on this forum that too much vacuum causes the transmission to shift super softly.

So it seemed like my Vacuum Control Valve wasnt bleeding anything off. I pulled the linkage off the VCV coming from the throttle and tested it manually. Still no drop. The lever on the VCV gave me no resistance at all so I was afraid that it was broken internally. This is when I started pulling things apart. Honestly though, there was nothing to it:

There it is down on the Fuel Pump.

A little closer:

Disconnect two vac hoses and the throttle link.
Unscrew the hex bolts.
And its out:

I unscrewed the side screws to see if the internals were broken. Fortunately, they were not. It was just adjusted such that turning the lever did not apply enough force to the upper stopper to move it up and bleed off.

Once I rotated the axle in there and tightened the nut back, the plastic lifter would move with the lever rotation and allow it to function properly.

I put it all back in the car and voila, my car shifted hard as hell! So... I took it back out and loosened the nut, this time NOT removing the cover and allowed the axle to spin just a little bit. I put it back in and now it seems glorious. Thanks guys for all the fantastic posts. I was sure I needed a new, couple thousand dollar, transmission, but instead I bought a 35 dollar mityvac. Hooooraaay!

Nice account of dealing with the VCV.

I thought exactly the same thing. I thought we had stepped back into the early 80's.

Well, first I dont know how to simply concatenate this post into the other, and the other post started as a "what's this" and ended on my transmission probs. I kinda figured this would be a good post for searchers wondering about their VCVs and their relation to the transmission shifting.

And thanks for the compliments guys, I was fortunate to buy this garage kept car with a fairly new ~60k mile motor in it. Its all in really great shape and I am super excited to own it. Particularly now that the transmission shifts so much better!
