Front end drop
Hello everyone,
I am posting this for a friend who has had some trouble with his car. He drove the car to work and found a piece of metal that fell out of the car. He didnt think anymore of it and drove home. When he got home, he put the car in a garage and left it there. He came out to look to see where the piece of metal came from and found the whole drivers side of the car on the ground. The oil pan touches the ground and the tire is holding up the car from going any further down. The passenger side is fine he said. I know that this forum has helped me with all my troubles so, I know that you folks will be able to help him out. I will try to get some pictures up this weekend but I thought I could get some pointers to look at before I go see the car. Thanks folks. DK Woops, his car is a 1984 300dt(sedan) I believe.

My guess would be it sounds like it could be a broken coil spring, but can't say for sure.

I saw an old rusty 240d a few weeks ago on which the spring perch was just about ready to go up into the hood. Given your location, it's possible the perch has just rusted away.
I can't imagine any scenario in which the news will be pleasant.

Okay everyone, we found out that it is a broken spring. Both ends of the spring snapped off. But here is the part that he found under his car when he was at work. Can anyone identify it? It was sitting underneith the driver side door/ suspension area.

Sorry about no pics. I am helping him out but he is barely around now days. I cannot get the pics now but the first 3 inches on both ends of the spring were snapped off. After checking the other spring, it appears he will need two springs. The other spring has a crack in it. The car is leaning way down on the drivers side. Thanks for the mention of the guide rod. The pictured object is about 6 inches in length. I will do my best to get hte pics of the other stuff. Thanks guys.
