Anyone had shaky power steering?

Has anyone experienced vibration in the steering wheel when steering? I notice it when parking my 85 300D or any time I move the steering wheel off center. Hard to notice when the vehicle is moving past parking speeds. Kind of annoying.

I am running a Nardi wooden steering wheel..can't remember if it was there when I had the stock schoolbus wheel. Probably was, but the rubber/vinyl wheel probably damped it a lot better.

I figure this means my power steering pump is tired (the high pressure hose has a slow leak but I keep it topped up). The steering is nice and tight (new upper control arms and tie rods) with barely any play. Another thing is my belts are all pretty old and cracked and maybe the old drivebelt is the culprit? I am going to replace them soon. Was just wondering if this was a common thing with these cars.

Mine is silky smooth, but I also flushed it and filled it with valvoline synpower p/s fluid a couple years ago, and put in a new filter. It liked it a lot, and was way better afterwards. I'd recommend doing that. Cost me about $25 total. Belt could be slipping too. I just replaced mine a couple months ago.

I've never replaced a belt on a Mercedes before, how hard is it to do?

I replaced an alternator belt on my friend's Pontiac which took 10 seconds since there's a lot of room under the hood and the alternator was way up top.

Pretty easy. Mine was slipping and caused same problem. Only noticeable in parking situations.

Loosen the three mounting bolts for the p/s pump, then adjust the tensioner screw till the belt is floppy, remove belt. Put on new belt, adjust so it has maybe 1/2" of give when you push on the belt, and then re-tighten the bolts that hold the pump in place again. Very easy belt to replace. If it still slips you can adjust it a teeny bit tighter, but not too tight, it can put too much stress on the crank pulley bolts.

I also recommend flushing/replacing the p/s fluid and filter.

At a minimum, check the fluid level in the Power Steering reservoir. When low it can start to burble through the pump due to air bubbles, and this causes pressure fluctuations.
