1985 300SD - won't shut off
I have a 1985 300SD Turbo Diesel that recently won't let me shut it off. I now have to shut it off manually under the hood. I heard it was a vacume problem with the ignition, but the door locks and other vacume system components seem fine - anyone know how to fix?

Mine will do this if I accidentally bump a certain vac line loose under the hood. For me, it happens where the check valve is, back by the firewall and master brake cylinder. You can eye ball it... Mine is an 82 300D so maybe different with an SD, but I doubt it.

I also has this problem on my '82 300. I disconnected the yellow check valve, engine now shuts off, door locks no longer are powered, yet work manually.

You have a vacuum leak somewhere. Use a mity vac to test the shutoff valve at the back of the injection pump, then test the other legs of the system for leaks.

Trace the shut down circuit. This one does go through the ignition switch also, and is easy to knock loose if you have been poking around under the dash.

I have an 83 300 SD. The vacuum for the door locks is a separate pump (electric pump) in the trunk.
My 240D would not shut off at one point. As opposed to a vacuum leak, it was a vacuum line that was clogged with some goop.

Get a length of rubber vacuum hose and attach it to the shut off valve on the back of the injection pump in place of the existing vacuum hose. With the engine running, give a couple of big sucks on the hose. If the engine shuts down, the shut off valve is working and there's a vacuum problem elsewhere. If it doesn't shut down, and particularly if you get a mouthful of oil when you suck, the shut off valve has failed and needs to be replaced.

FIxed
Thank you so much, it turns out I knocked loose one of the vacuum lines when I was changing the oil filter. It took a while to find both ends but the ignition worked right away. Thanks, thrill
