190D emissions sticker
I'm new to the forum and considering buying a 190D.
I was wondering if they are all 50 state emission legal. If so it would allow me to look outside California. Thanks for any information or maybe a look under the hood at your sticker! |

does it really matter on a 20+ year old car?

Well, you wouldn't think so, but I live in California and according to the DMV website, the car has to meet California emission standards to transfer title.
I know they added 2 liters to the 2.2 because of the added emissions and associated power loss, but I don't know if they were all built to 50 state laws. |

Purchasing out of state vehicles in CA
Hi,
I live here in Santa Cruz, and have looked into purchasing out of state vehicles. As I understand it, you can purchase an out of state car that is 49 state emissions legal, and register it in California if: 1. It has at least 7500 miles on it when you bought it. (No buying it new and driving 7500 miles before you return to CA.) Or 2. Your current car became disabled while you were driving out of state. If this happens, you can purchase a new 49 state vehicle and register it in CA. You cannot, however, purchase a grey market import car that may be legal in another state and register it in California. Likewise CA has special rules for engine conversion, and just because it was legal to put that diesel engine in a gas car in another state it doesn't mean that it works in CA. Please double check this with the DMV before you plunk down your money.. Max Behensky

Thanks for the info. I have been doing some searches and for smog exempt diesels (now '97 and older) it seems they need a visual inspection only. So federal standards should be ok, unless something has changed over the past couple years. This was not official DMV info. I just wondered if all the 190D's were 50 state legal or they made two versions. If they were all 50 state legal then no worries.

Dose anyone have a 190D with a surviving emission sticker?
