Newbie question- disconnecting AT?

I'm a real novice at car work, and I've been preparing to remove the 617.910 out of my 76 300D. I've been having some trouble removing rusty bolts from the exhaust manifold, etc., but I think I'll eventually figure that out.

I'd like to remove the engine without the tranny, but I can't seem to find any good instructions. The FSM wants me to take them out together, but I'd rather not. I'm sure it's not a difficult process, but I'm really a true novice, so any help would be awesome.

Oh, and it's an automatic, w115.114.
Thanks!
-steve

I know there have been posts about just this thing. try going to google.com and doing an advanced search of this site, with all words like 617 engine removal and or seperate engine from transmission... something like that.
I believe there is a long shaft that will not fit out of the engine compartment by pulling the engine from the trans in the bay.
perhaps you can lift the car enough to get the trans out first?
