Injection pump delivery valve parts orientation question??? 603 617 210

I was advised in another post to post about the orientation of the IP delivery valve parts . I replaced the O rings and crush washers in the IP delivery valves on my 96E300 which are apparently similar to the 603 and 617 pumps. I ended up taking out and cleaning the parts below the crush washer and spring and probably misoriented them on reassembly. The car runs but knocks at idle and driving --and belches black smoke at idle. it despite this ran reasonably good up to 60mph.
I'd appreciate advice on proper reassembly.
Steve

So,-Can you list the parts you removed and re-fitted...?

(PLEASE, Tell me you Didnt remove the two 13mm headed nuts one each side of the H.P. outlet union..... --If you did, its a pump off job, and re-calibration )

What you (Hopefully!) removed was--

The outlet union with del.valve Spring and its shim from up inside the H.P union you unscrewed and the copper-washer....

The central 'Plunger' part of the delivery-valve, usually left inside the pump...

The outer part of the delivery-valve...

I hope you didn't go ANY deeper than those components, or you're a bit stuffed, and will need to remove the IP and have it re-calibrated as the position of the outer-part of the pumping-element on some pumps sets the 'phasing' and fuelling. It needs a 'calibration Test-Bench and Makers test-plan to set these things correctly

I removed the delivery valve body (splined upper), O ring, spring, copper crush ring and the two parts that are loose beneath the spring. (one fits in the other) and on one also the plunger- it popped up. I washed and reinstalled the parts. I may have mis-oriented the parts on reinstallation?

Its not possible to remove the 'Plunger' of the pumping-element on that type IP without first dissassembling the cam and whole bottom assembly...

I guess you removed the Outer-part of the pumping-element, and Not its central plunger, which is located in a collet arrangement from below.

These parts should never be removed unless you really know what you're doing...(Never ever heard of one 'Jumping up' either, they are usually quite a 'snug' fit in the case, Not tight, just snug....)

It should be fitted in one Position Only....

As discussed in another post, I think you may have re-fitted this incorrectly and damaged it and or the pump case, by shearing off the locating nipple.

I dont think I sheared the nipple. What position should it go in? It did pop up while I was working. I didn't take apart the pump, only the delivery valves one at a time.

Steve - where are you with this? I may need to replace the O rings in mine.
