Injection pump delivery valve parts orientation question??? 603 617 210

I was advised in another post to post about the orientation of the IP delivery valve parts . I replaced the O rings and crush washers in the IP delivery valves on my 96E300 which are apparently similar to the 603 and 617 pumps. I ended up taking out and cleaning the parts below the crush washer and spring and probably misoriented them on reassembly. The car runs but knocks at idle and driving --and belches black smoke at idle. it despite this ran reasonably good up to 60mph.
I'd appreciate advice on proper reassembly.
