Anyone know where I can get this grommet?

On the 300SDL's their is a grommet that supports the main vacuum line that comes off the engine driven vacuum pump. Their is a bracket that comes off the fuel filter housing that holds this line and guides it back. Their is a rubber grommet in their, keeping the line in the bracket. Mine is shot, I have tape holding it together and it looks like crap. I spent 45 minutes at the dealer looking through their program with them and couldn't find anything. I found one that looked close and it was only $.70 so I ordered it. Came direct from Germany and is no where near what I need.

So has anyone gone through this before? Is their a source? I'm going to raid the industrial supply books we have down the boat yard tomarrow and see if I can't come up with anything.

Anyone have a solution? I don't even know if I can get one made, I don't know anyone who works with rubber.

Try to look around electrical or plumbing sections at Home Depot I know I got some grommets from them that I used under the wheel well for the brake pad sensor wires.

If you can't find anythig that will fit, try some rubber vacuum hose, cut it to the length of the desired circumference, and slice along laterally, then install the sliced part along the metal hole.

I know what you are talking about as my TD has the same gromet. I have a piece of epdm holding mine. I guess 20 years is about their life span. Let us know if you can source one.

Grommets

Big hardware stores fastener sections....also harbor freight has a grommet selection kit.....might also want to look at the auto parts stores in the fasteners sections...auto zone ,advance auto and such...they have lots of grommets.....

Thumbs up

I was at the dealer this week picking up bits for my 300SEL, I spent about 30min with the cat in wholesale on their EPC... only crap we could come up with is that the piece is attached to the booster line.

Seems odd to me.

Currently, I have an old breather tube part on there from the valve cover down to the intake boot. It's a loose fit, but better than nothing.

BTW - I have some extra fuel door rubber nubs if anyone needs them, order got FUBAR'd and I have thirty now.

Another option you could go with is something called "caterpillar track" available at most electrical/electronics stores. Its that plastic stuff used along metal edges that has the little "feet" along the length of it, comes as a strip that you bend to fit and cut to length.

I'll take a couple if you don't mind. I'll shoot you a PM later.

Correct gromet?

Did you ever find out where to get that gromet?
I need the same one, and would love to know what you ended up using.

thanks

Yeah I did find the perfect replacement, but I forget where I got it. Most likely out of the boat yards engine shop.

Soiurces of rubber

Whenever I need anything rubber that isn't an O-ring, I go to Public Rubber or to Mc Master Carr (Chicago) the latter has a big nline catalog. They are the best for stuff like that.

If all else fails, Roger Zatcoff.I have been to his actual retail outlet and the guys working there try hard to piss you off by being snotty, asking questions like what all the original dimensions of things are etc etc., will you buy 10 bucks worth etc etc.

So the last time I came in, I told them I wanted 200 O-rings of a particular size, money no object, as long as they could guarantee that the product (whether EPDM or Butyl-N or even Viton) was impervious to molybdenum chloride.

When the knucklehead obviously didn't know the answer, I p=o'd him by asking if there was a more experienced person I could talk to...

I used to work at a hydraulic place and we sold a lot of O-rings and valves with special seals. If any customer asked a tech question I did not know I would tell them so and offer to find out.

It was not hard as there are all types of tables published on the subject.

This normally resulted in a small sale, but one strange request resulted in an order for 250,000 small air regulateors at $11 each.

Working in a place like that... It helps if you like what you are doing. Odd requests were not a bother; they were a challange.

I used a piece of PS Return hose and wrapped it around the plastic and snuggled it into the bracket. Been there for 2 yrs and no problems/
