New Steering Column lock failed prematurely

OK,

I'm taking a poll. I had my steering lock mechanism AND the tumbler replaced 3 years ago (42,000 miles since). Yes its out of warranty now, however my indy and I agreed this is a 100,000 mile part.

He's going to call his mercedes dealer parts supplier and lean on him for a steeper discount on the new part. Luckily I knew when it started going south, to leave the key in the engaged position, so the tumbler is out. Dodged that bullet. Its "catching" about every 10th try. The tumbler is fine.

Anyone else have a pre-mature failure of this part? Maybe this thing needs a good pre-lube before installing.

(me thinks its the same manufacturer who designed the 123 air filter bracket)

That sounds unusual, I believe mine is original (380K miles). I have no idea what would make one fail in 40K miles.

So apparently the key is turning the lock, but it is not engaging the switch/steering lock beneath it?

When the steering lock mechanism goes bad, it can also lock up the ignition tumbler. If a BAD steering lock mechanism jambs while the steering wheel is centered, the tumbler may not turn.

I have a good tumbler. We pulled it and I'm starting my car with a screwdriver. The new part was ordered and its getting installed tomorrow.

$275 for new part and installation. I just spent this 3 years ago.

I'm wondering if the factory part had little to no lubrication in it. I'm thinking that some Mobil One wheel grease or a Moly assembly lube ought to be shot into that lock before its installed.
