lol? are you serious? your using a tourqe wrench on valve cover bolts? i guess thats what you would use if you dont mechanic every day. after awhile you start to learn what the diffrent poundages are. i could tourque headbolts without a tourque wrench i do it all the time and not once have i ever had one come back. (allthough i will say its not the most professional way to do it.)

Torque wrench? Is that the thing with all the dust on it in the bottom drawer of my toolbox?
I use a 3/8 ratchet and get them Guten-Tight. |

a good buddy of mine says to tighten them down until they strip, then back off 1/4 turn...
he also uses foot lbs for inch pounds when tightening the pan bolts on his astro... 70 INCH pounds is quite different than 70 Foot Lbs... the funny thing is he broke 4 bolts before deciding to ask me the settings... HA I bought him a nice inch pound torque wrench for his birthday, and to this day, I still rag him with the little phrase, "INCH Pounds!' John

I'll make a wager that your nuts are nowhere near the specified torque and you run the risk of leaks below the gasket or twisting of the cover itself. That torque on that valve cover is critical due to the design. It's a classic case of a mechanic who thinks he's got more knowledge than the engineer who designed the fastener. All too common, unfortunately. |
