Alarm Control Module - Part 000 820 52 26

I have figured out from the forums that the part number indicated is the alarm control module. It is still connected as originally installed from the factory, but I just noticed a persistent ticking noise coming from the box.

Ticking happens whether the key is in the ignition or not.

Any idea what's going on with this piece? If I simply disconnect the connector, I would assume the ticking would go away, but do I need this box? What functionality do I lose by disconnecting the box?

Part Number stuff on box:
000 820 52 26
BAW 840 Z 0008

I have disconnected the alarm box on my 87 300D and my 87 300SDL without any adverse effects. The door switches were bad on both cars which required me to unlock the car from the trunk (which I forgot to do on a regular basis - nothing like a car alarm going off at 5am to upset the neighbors)

I've done the same thing. Nothing to make you look more suspicious in a hs/univ parking lot than attempting to get into a Mercedes whose alarm won't stop.
