Can I remove the vacuum converter and switchover valves

I have recently accquired an 84 300 SD. If I cap the vacuum lines going to the EGR valve and the Air recirculating valve can I get rid of the associated Vacuum converter and vacuum switchover valve. It looks like the only other connection that these two go to is the vent filter (?). What would I then hook to this (the vent filter) line.

Thanks for the link. When I follow the vacuum lines from these two valves they have black return lines that tee into the VCV which also tees into a black line that goes through the firewall (vent ?). Can I just connect the line that goes/comes through the firewall directly into the VCV. Looking through the threads mentions that these vacuum valves are on top of the valve cover. Mine are not. They are on the passenger side fender wall. I also don't have a vacuum line going to the thermostat and then then the EGR. just some more info. Thanks

EEK! Does this car have Kalifornia emissions? Or maybe it is a very late '84 model with something similar to what is on the '85?
If so, the emission system is a whole other "breed of cat" and if I recall correctly, modification will cause drastic transmission shifting problems.

I don't think it has California emissions. Following the vacuum lines makes me think it is Federal. Is there an easy way to tell.

My '83 is different than yours. Won't comment on whether that's a good thing or not. I have disabled the EGR, same place, had black box on cam cover, the one line went to a 4 way connector, now a 3 way, to top of VCV. Other 3 way, now a straight hook up, to lower side of VCV. Did the same thing on the CD.

It looks like the 84 California version is the same as the 85 Federal version. I checked the diagrams on www.peterschmid.com and my lines match the 84 California /85 Federal diagram. So back to the original question. Can I disconnect my EGR and air recurcilating valves and hence remove the Switchover and Vacuum converter vavles?

Yes you can. Dont forget to plug the vacuum source. You can get rid of the vent line too.

By getting rid of the vent line do you mean to connect the vent line going through the firewall directly to the VCV or capping the line going throught the firewall and plugging the opening at the VCV?

I would leave the vent line connected to the VCV so that I wont have any vacuum lines dangling in there.

From studying the diagram, it appears that you could place a couple of BB's @
(1)3-way connection to vent filter (#85)
(2)Orifice connection (#63) to switchover valve (#84)
(The only question is what the Circulating Air Safety Valve (#71) does at the turbo.)
Form and drill a copper plate for the manifold-egr valve joint and be done. (This leaves all of the system "intact" for any future inspection possibilities and eliminates the EGR "problem".)
Also, the vent line to the passenger compartment is for the vacuum pump and doesn't have anything to do with the EGR system.
