1999 e300 squeaky steering wheel
When turning the steering wheel there is a squeaking/rubbing noise coming from the steering column. almost sounds like plastic on rubber?
I do know that previous owner had four wheel alignment done and the steering wheel was removed and turned one notch to keep it horizontal.

Make sure screws holding the clock spring are tight. BTDT.
*Disconnect battery, wait 10 min* Do not unplug air bag if vehicle has power, or you will be going to the dealer for a Xentry reset of the SRS. T25 behind the wheel, loosen about 10 turns each side to free up air bag, pull off, unplug, set upright in a safe area. Mark relationship of wheel and shaft. Be sure your wheels are dead straight ahead. 10 MM hex on big honking breaker bar, have helper hold back on wheel so it does not stress the lock. Pull wheel off shaft. Check the philips head screws holding the clock spring assembly. It may be the clock spring itself going bad, if so it's not real hard to change if you've got it this far apart. You have to drop the lower dash below the drivers side to unplug it, then just unscrew, pull off, thread out the harness.
