so the bulbs on the instrument cluster work as fuses?

if so i assume there needs to be bulbs in all the slots? working or not?

No, they are just bulbs. There is a fuse in the fusebox.

Possibly because incandescent bulbs are designed to fail in a particular way - look inside any normal 100W household bulb and you can see wires that 'pull' the element away if it breaks.

Bulbs are essentially just resistors.

i was reading somewhere and a section sounded as if they could be responsible for possible intermittent activity in a cluster

i know my gauge is off and odo is broken.
