81 300TD SLS Pumps engine oil into SLS?
Hello All..
I have a 300TD wagon and I believe the SLS pump may have gone sour.
When I bought it the system didn't seem to work. I discovered that the valve lever was loose and I tightened it. I brought CHF 11S fluid (listed as compatible- its the green citroen stuff) because the reservoir had about an inch of black fluid in the bottom of it. I flushed the system by getting 550lbs of sandbags in the back and raising and lowering the system while draining the return line into a can and filling with new fluid. After 3 liters it came out green and I hooked it back up. It was at the max line. I then tested for adjustment and had the suspension so it would sit on the springs at 14 inches from MB star to fender lip with no load and lever in down position. Then it would be neutral at the same level, and after loading in 550lbs it would raise to the same 14 inches. Drove the system unloaded for about 2 or 3 weeks, and then went to replace the rear brakes. When I jacked it up on the pumpkin (wheels hanging) I discovered a huge oil slick under the front of the car. Popped the hood and the SLS reservoir was overflowing BAD. I removed the dipstick, and there were big 'waves' as a lot of air came out of the top- pushing black fluid with a ton of air bubbles in it out the top. (car was running) I figured it was the system venting air that I never vented and I just let it run out. Today I came home and popped the hood to check and it was overflowing everywhere again. I checked the oil dipstick (just did an oil change about 1,500 miles ago when I bought it) and it wasn't on the dipstick. I went to get some more Rotella T and filled it- but now it seems like the engine oil has strangely similar mini bubbles in it. Also- the reservoir stopped overflowing after I added engine oil? (Might have been dreaming here)
Is my pump shot? Does anyone know if there is a rebuild kit? Can I continue to drive it until I get it rebuilt or is it pumping SLS fluid into the engine oil as well?
Thanks (sorry its so long)
Tim
