Talking Ran out of fuel during "diesel purge" Italian Tuneup

I didn't use diesel purge - I used 16oz Seafoam, 32oz? Diesel Kleen, 8oz veg oil in a 1/2 gallon container with return. Engine was at 80+ c prior to starting. Started up ran for 10 min sounded alot better at idle after a couple min. Drove about 50 mph/3k rpm mostly 3rd gear, few stops, then 75 mph 4th gear. After 1 mi started losing power, WTF? Drove maybe 5 miles total, safely pulled over in construction zone on highway, RAN OUT OF "FUEL" ! Luckily I thought I might be running out so I turned off motor while rolling (I also have 2 gal diesel in trunk since d can be hard to find). Changed lines back, and pumped back up- lots of air, and started raining HARD in front of Orlando airport, lucky again started right back up. Drove back home with a ***** eatin' grin. Couldn't believe it sucked down that much "fuel", what was left in the container was nasty lookin' grey crap, maybe 1oz. I must have cleaned it out really good though! 85 300sd runs super nice, guess 25mpg? prior to purge - broken odometer, At fuel up I add couple oz per gallon of veg oil to ULSD since I bought 6 weeks ago.

Dirty purge

My first purge had a black fluid in the return. Second one, about 10k later was clean.

i bought a 79 300d..the prefilter was filthy so I purged it with some veggie oil. It was nasty stuff coming out of the spin on. I purged it again with something else, can't remember now, but after two pre-filters and a new spin on, and driving it VERY HARD, it purrs like a kitten now.

I did a second purge about 35k after my initial one when I got the car (probably its first, around 215k) it was ever so slightly dirty the second time, but was pretty nasty the first time. Its probably the way I drive. Keeping it at 90% load and above 3500rpm a lot probably help to keep everything nice and clean...

Although I have a spare filters...

Although I have a spare filters I'm not going to change quite yet. Prefilter is very clean, starting to get some small black particles. I'm assuming its black gunk from the tank since adding veg oil, and PO died about 1+ year ago. I like me diesel!

Hey Badgator,

Is it critical to actually go for a drive with the purge? I guess it puts a load on the engine -- just wonder if it is ineffective to just do it in the driveway and rev the engine.
