what is it that causes a diesel to continue to run after it's turned off? is it a general problem? i parked the car for a week and now it keeps running when i take the key out.

where do i start?

Hmm

Vacuum related, definitely. For me, it was the vacuum lines from the shut off switch next to the key cylinder, as well as the switch itself. For you, it could be a shutoff valve on the injection pump, or anything...

Isolate the problem first; take the two vacuum lines connected to the pump. Suck on the brown hose going directly to the top. Engine should shut off. Or for me, an easier solution, to kill to birds with one stone, was to remove the switch on the ignition, depress the plunger, and have a friend start the car. When the plunger is released, the car should shut off.

There are a variety of reasons, but I am not 100% sure what they all are (happilly so)

Someone else will chime in, I guarantee.

chime...
the shutoff is on the back side of the ip, not the top. follow the brown line, and trace vacuum issues. look out for oil in the line, that means you have a busted actuator... fun.

I ran a direct vacuum line to the shut off valve..... It is UNDER the ALDA. Took me a while to find it.
