$15 Redneck Slide hammer and Prechamber adapter (Pics)
 

Yep, its another "I'm too cheap to spend $200 on a tool I'll use a few times.." thread. But this one has a cheap solution. I spent $15 on making my slide hammer and thread adapter to pull the precombustion chamber on a 602. It can be done on a 61x just as badly and easily. Whether you would want to or not is another question, probably best left to a psychologist to answer. But I like making stuff so I did (got to justify buying that mig welder to the wife perhaps?)

Basically what I did was make a slide hammer from a 1/2" bolt, some washers and barbell weights. The nut that goes on the bolt is welded to a 1/2" x 20 thread nut which screws onto the top of the spare injector you sacrifice to being the thread adapter. I welded the top of the spare sacrificial injector to the nut because otherwise it strips the nut's thread when you use the slide hammer. Cheap Chinese steel you know. I had the spare injector lying around from a visit to the local junkyard ($11). You could probably use jb weld to weld the stuff together and it would work just fine. All you're really doing is going from the 1/2" bolt to the injector base thread.

Here's a closeup of the bottom piece. From the right it goes - 1/2 inch bolt, 1/2" bolt nut welded to 1/2" x 20 self locking nut welded to top half of injector body screwed into bottom of injector screwed into prechamber.

You screw the welded nut concoction off the 'slide hammer' bolt and screw the injector into the prechamber. Then you screw the bolt back onto the injector and use it just like a slide hammer. I initially used 3lbs of weight, but it wasn't getting anywhere. I put on 6 lbs and the pc came out after a few good whacks.

Parts:
1 x Long 1/2 inch bolt - (Lowes part number 61845)
1 x nut for long bolt - (Lowes part number 63304)
4 x Washers - (Lowes part number 68885 )

You also need a 1/2 x 20 thread nut to go on the top of the injector. The only 1/2" nuts with a 20 thread I found were self locking nuts. You'll need one of the those. 1/2" diameter, 20 thread.

6 lbs or so of barbell weights (those things that have been lying in the garage for years...)

1 spare injector top

Assemble and apply to cylinder head. Step back and bask as crowds cheer and neighbors ask for your autograph....and your wife doesn't scream because you spent more money on tools for the car...

FYI-normal threaded rod is junk steel, don't rely on it unless you specifically purchase Rated threaded rod.

Yes, exactly. 1 rod costs about $1 and is easily removed and replaced.

Interesting. The om60X does not have a lock ring?

The problem is that it won't work on the OM61x engines. The injectors thread into the lock ring on them.

Yes, the 60x has a locking ring. Depending on the engine it is either the splined type or the 61x type with a groove cut in it. Here's a pic of the splined type half way in with the splined socket in it.

Forced induction - how do you pull the pc from a 61x then?

Ah, well you learn something every day.

Looks like I'll be pulling off the intake manifold and seeing if I can't get the remaining 4 prechambers to stop leaking. Maybe then the car will not sound like an old tractor and the wife will be all smiles again......hope springs eternal...

That's where I rented the socket for the 60X ring remover, and the electronic timing thingymabob. Cheap too. Just the way I like it.

I'm sure we can agree that there are different standards for "redneck" in various parts of the country.

Sir, I wish to inform you that in my area you would not be considered a redneck because you own barbell weights. Rednecks would not spend money on barbells when there are plenty of other ways and reasons to achieve muscular tone through work. Lifting hay bales, changing equipment on the tractor, splitting firewood, and the like.

Your ownership of barbells would make you more of a "city slicker" with a "paper pushing job" in these parts. True rednecks work on the farm, in the factories and on construction jobs and when they get home they aren't thinking of "working out" any more - they're already "wore out".

I have posted on there and not received and replies...

A terrific idea that I will improve upon for use on the 61x.

Today I bought a bicycle crank puller to fit the threading in my 300sd. Get the Park Tool USA CCP-2. It has the same nut and is $12.99 vs $15.99 for the CCP-4. Tomorrow I am going to the specialty bolt shop to get a long bolt to fit the inner thread of puller nut. I'll post the specifics after I get it.

Using your idea, I will build a puller that will work for people like me that don't have immediate access to a welder.

An added bonus for the ethically challenged, do it my way and you can return everything to the sellers and get your money back.

To remove the retaining collar, I'm going to use a cutoff tool to cut a 31/32 half inch drive socket to where it has two ears to fit into the slots of the threaded ring collar. A one inch socket works as well, but it seems more useful in the future than the 31/32, so the slacker gets sacrificed.

Now all I have to do is find the weights.
