I just spent my 4th of July replacing my water pump on my 82 300SD Turbodiesel and once I had it all done and filled up, I started it up and its sounds twice as loud. Could that short time in overheating land really have caused this thing to spin a rode bearing? That what it sounds like when I listen to the motor idling. Its only got 176,000 actual miles. I thought these things were unbreakable. Ive only owned the car for a few months and loved the way it ran and sounded. I am really depressed now, do I have to get a total engine rebuild?
Can they pull the pan and just replace the bearing (if thats what it is)
I was reading some of these threads that say a bad injector can sound like a knock? Could this overheat I had trigger the injector failure? Im lost....

Make sure the proximity switch is not touching the "pin" as it comes around on the front of the crankshaft. While working on the front of my engine one time I accidently hit the bracket that holds the prox switch and it allowed the "pin" to hit causing knocking noise.
