newbie 606 motor questions
I did a search and also checked the DIY articles but didn't find my answers.
1. Does the 606 motor have a power steering filter like the older motors in the w123 chassis? 2. Does anyone have a HOWTO for changing the serpentine belt on the 606 motor? Not a lot of room to work there and want to make sure I do it properly. Thanks!!! ![]()

1) No filter. I just periodically suck out the fluid in the reservoir and replace it with fresh stuff, so eventually I land up with mostly new fluid in there but flushing it is more thorough, just messier. 2) You need simply to remove the tension from the spring-loaded tensioner (do a search but I use a long 3/8" ratchet extension in the hole to pry it so there is slack in the belt, then pull the belt off the pulley). Once you have it off the tensioner pulley you can snake it out without even removing the fan. Just either make note of the path before you start or refer to the diagram in the owner's manual so you get it right. Good luck.

Some parts house will list a PS filter, as Marty said, it is not applicable to our W210's.
When reinstalling the serp belt i usually tie a 3' piece of strong string to it between the alt and balancer and then fish the string up between the WP and tensioner and use it to pull the belt up and through that tight spot. By doing that I can usually get it on and off in 5 or 10 minutes.

Yeah well, better to have one and not need it than need it and not have it.

Anyway the belt is cake to change, you don't need to remove the fan I have done it with the fan in place. However it makes it easyer to remove the fan. The owners manual will show you the routing of the belt, just losen the tensoner and go at it.

For what it's worth, on later model MB's the P/S filter is built into the fluid reservoir. If I remember correctly, it's not too pricey (fifty bucks?). It doesn't include a new O-ring, so make sure to ask for one if you decide to do it.

![]() That diamond bit in the middle - I found that in one of the undertrays. I always wondered what it was. Does it do anything, since its probably missing on my viscous fan. My viscous coupling is fairly weak btw. |
