No 4th Gear?

So this morning on the way to work the auto tranny in my 83 240D was behaving abnormally. Essentially it would not shift into 4th gear at all (up to 55 mph), and it was shifting into 2nd and 3rd at higher RPM's than usual. It seemed as if it would only shift if I was really stepping on the pedal as well. And, no downshifting at all unless I was coming to a stop.

Two days ago I was mucking around under the hood so I thought perhaps I had knocked a vacuum hose loose so I stopped and investigated but nothing obvious jumped out at me. I'm hoping this is a vacuum issue, but perhaps it is mechanical?

The transmission in this car has never behaved perfectly with some occasional clunking and rough shifts but nothing like this. Yesterday it appeared to be functioning normally. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

After confirming vacuum hoses, I would check fluid level and condition. Also if a 240 has one, check the bowden cable connection to the throttle linkage, on top of the valve cover. After that, a trans fluid/fliter change may be in order.

It was just a vacuum hose. The Y off the main line for the transmission related features had deteriorated and was leaking. Now all is well again.
