123 starter works,but not with key.

After sitting for a year I bought a new battery for my '84 300TurboDiesel{ since my '98 E300 may be leaving}...Started right up,then several times thereafter.

Now the key won't do it at all....I just get a relay click somewhere in the dash.

I jumped the starter on the contacts located on the front wheelwell and she starts every time.

Is there some sort of relay?bad ignition switch pehaps? I'm having the devil's own time locating related posts.
