Glow Plug Failure

I installed some off brand glow plugs in my 240D that the parts guy said were Bosche and about 2000 miles later they failed. I suspect these things were never in the same country as a Bosche factory; lesson learned. Now, it may be poor quality parts or perhaps the timer in the glow plug controller failed to turn off. Anyone out there have experience with this sort of failure? I went clear through the trouble shooting for the system figuring it couldn't be the glow plugs, but it was.

Reaming isn't required. I've never reamed mine and they all last at least a year.

I agree I don't think reaming is neccesary. I've never done.

Stick with Bosch or Beru brand glow plugs, they out last any!

BTW I've seen the Bosch name on parts made in Mexico and Brazil. Don't know if there is any difference in quality but make you wonder.

As long as the quality control is up to snuff it probably doesn't matter where they are made.....

so far all of the glow plugs I've used have been Bosch, made in France. I am coming up on a year with my current Bosch plugs....and I have the afterglow relay....so they've been doing pretty good. My last set prior was Bosch also, and they lasted about 1 year 11 months before one blew out completely....and I kept going like that for a few weeks, then another joined it, and I decided to change them all out. No idea if the Beru plugs are better, they do cost a couple $$ more....wonder where they are made.

Anyone used/recommend the Beru plugs? Where are they made?

A year on glow plugs - I expect to get about fifteen years out of a set. Changed them in my 240D in 1998 because I didn't have anything better to do. Hope to go until about 2013 before I have to mess with them again. Now the glow plugs on my 210 chassis might be a different story. I'll be happy with about five years out of them I guess.

Yeah, based on several comments above, I was wondering what had happened to the glow plug durability over the years. As previously noted here on the forum, I drove the 220D for about 20yrs on the glow plugs that were in it when we bought it. Never had one quit and since it was the old series style, would have known right away. Seems like the newer after-glow systems have done a number on the life of a typical glow plug! Even on the '83 300D, have driven nearly 5-years on the plugs in it when purchased and have not seen any indication of failure.

If you suspect a bad glow plug relay (power to glow plugs on too long), make a test light and clip it across the glow plug and watch.

Whew!

Man I thought I was the crazy one expecting more than a year out of glow plugs. Thank you so much for confirming that they should last longer than that!

Oh man, Test light - great idea, so simple.

Actually you already have a test light in the form of the overhead lite in the cabin. Just turn it on or open the front door before you start the glow procedure. It will dim while the GP's are being powered and will brighten back up when the relay times out and quits sending power to them. Unless you have the after glow type relay, glowing should also quit when you turn the key to the last position to start the engine.

I've always thought the loud thunk you'd hear from the relay was your indicator that it was off.

My plugs never seem to glow or light up (visually, at least), but I still manage to start my 1970 220D. Is there a way to test them - or can I assume they are fine as the car eventually starts?

It is... You can't really hear it on a W126 with the door/window closed though.

I know the afterglow turns off on mine after 3 mins of the engine running because my volt gauge goes from 11.9 volts to 14! All the lights brighten back up and the blower speeds up too.

I've been getting about 2 years per set of plugs....not too bad considering they run over 3 mins every time I start the car. I am at 14 months on the current set....they'd better last a while yet. I've never reamed out the holes either.

Are the Beru plugs made in Germany? I'd be willing to try those next time around (especially if any of my Bosch-france ones fail anytime soon)
