Transmissions on 1987 300D and 1988 190D

Hello MBZers,

I've got these two cars, each with their own problems:
1. the 300D flares in 3rd and intermittently won't go from N to R to P. Do I need a new tranny?
2. the 190D races between 2 and 3. A new transmission here as well?

Shops would love to dump a rebuilt one in for $4k and be done. Is there a less expensive way to go?
