Rumor: Dodge Truck Signs MB Diesel Contract??

Heard this tonite at the pumps from Dodge owner dunno how much is true: Dodge/Cumins contract expires next year. Cumins will supply diesels for Fords. And Freightliner Sprinter MB diesels will go into Dodge trucks? Can somebody verify or debunk this rumor. Heard it at Reno Nevada where practically none of what you see or hear is believable.

Completely untrue.

There is ALWAYS a rumor of Ford getting the Cummins and Dodge getting Mercedes because thats the way everyone wants it to be.

Same goes about the rumor that Ford owns part of Cummins.

Haven't heard that one at from the rumor mill at work. Chrysler is being bought by another firm. They already have ties with Cummins. Actually, a new smaller motor will be put in the Dodge truck in 2010. They will keep the larger one also.

I have often wished my 03 2500 ram with cummins was about 75% as big as it is, especially as I climb in or try to see to park it.

Actually Ford did own controlling interest in Cummins, but due to the exclusive contract with Dodge, they sold it off around 2000 as I remember. The contract between Dodge and Cummins meant Ford could only put the Cummins 5BT in a F-600 or other medium trucks, not pickups.

I'll have to check on the truck company that built my kids' school bus. I look at the "Mercedes Benz Powered" badge beside the bus' door every morning and afternoon. I'm guessing its a Freightliner though. Would it have to be?

Mercedes sold their interest in Chrysler. I also truly doubt that Dodge would dump Cummins in favor of Mercedes engines. I am personally into the Dodge-Cummins following and there would be alot of UPSET people if that were done. Why drop a WINNER!
With ALL of the troubles that FORD has been having with the 6.0 and 6.4 International engines, I would expect them to be knocking on someone elses door for diesel engines.

Just befoer I retired from UPS, They were buying new package cars that were MBZ powered. It is a stout 4 cylinder truck engine. The drivers loved them.

for different markets

The Cummins and Mercedes engines are for different applications. The Cummins takes a lot of vehicle to haul it around, it is not a passenger car engine. I don't think the Mercedes will haul 7000 # in a full size pickup.

Chrysler has put the Mercedes V6 diesel in the Grand Cherokee and now sells it in the US. I've read several articles on the same V6 in the Chrysler 300 and they say it is a great fit and gets mid to upper 30's for mpg. It is being sold in the UK and Australia already (seach chrysler 300 CRD). That is a winner in my mind. All the mid to full size cars can hit 23, 24, 25 mpg now. Bump that up by 10 and it is a clear difference for around $30K instead of the Mercedes entry point of $50K.

It also may be a win for Mercedes if they are looking for economies of scale for the engine production. Not sure of their goals there.

Chuck

I think Ford only had 25% of Cummins stock. They do put some Cummins engines in some of thier larger trucks. I think Mercedes tried to put their engine in the larger Dodge trucks. It didn't work out. Others had the same oppertunity to put Cummins engines into their product. I have seen in trade reports that Ford and possibly GM will also have smaller diesels in their trucks by 2009 or 2010. There was even a rumor in the local paper that Fiat was going to buy Cummins. That didn't happen. Cyberus or something like that is suppose to put the money down to purchase Chrysler in October. They already own Blue Bird busses and another bus company.

Another rumor. Ford DID own a small percentage a long time ago but sold it all a few years later. It had nothing at all to do with Dodge or Chrysler.
