I priced a 617 engine from the dealer.

Just in case anyone is curious, I was talking to my buds at the dealer parts counter today (bought an oil filter), and I asked them how much they would sell a 617 turbo long block for. The gave me a price of $6700 (50K mile/4 year warrantee), which I thought was pretty reasonable (metric motors is about $6000, as I recall). Apparently these are very complete engines (IP, alternator, water pump, etc). He said he just sold some for use in snow cats, apparently the benz price is lower than buying them through the snow cat manufacturer.

I'm not planning on needing an engine anytime soon, but it's good to know they are available.

The army surplus sites have em for sale every once in a while. AFAIK 617 is still using in asia.

Think they still sell an OM 616 engine for a 240D?

I love my car and don't ever want to get rid of it...not until after grad school...if it turns out I need a new car before then, I might just buy a new engine :p

I assume they also sell a 616 engine (there are probably a lot more 616s than 617s worldwide), if not you can always buy a long block from metric motors for about $5350:

If my engine goes bad, rather than buying a new car, I'm just getting a new engine. I plan to keep this car until it rusts itself to death. (And I live in Florida -- it might be a while!)

It's be interesting to know how much a new turbo 616 from Tempo India might run. Wouldn't surprise me if a person could get one pretty reasonably.

With 217K miles, you should have a long way to go before you need to worry about it. My wife's 240D has that kind of miles, but she only puts on 5-10K per year (at the most), that engine should outlive me.

My 300D is over 400K, but it seems strong. Realistically, I will probably have to toss in a new engine in another 100K, or so. I would rather pay $7K for an engine than $60K for a new car.

So is that a crate engine or long block? A long block is just a bare block with the head bolted on, maybe an IP.

If thats the price for a brand new crate engine, its not bad. Much better than $6k for a Metric rebuild!

It's a complete engine with IP, water pump, alternator (they think), etc. I didn't ask if it included a turbo, but I would guess it does. It is a factory reman, not a NEW block. It sounds pretty close to "plug and play." If/when I actually need to buy something, I'll look into it in more detail. Today, I was just BS'ing with the parts guys.

It did sound like a decent deal, I was expecting them to say it was $10K. It's hard to guess when the dealer prices may be competitive.

I bought one of these for my 82 w123. It is basically plug and play, and it includes a new turbo mine came with the KKK turbo which really makes the car scream.

At Napa http://www.napaonline.com I randomly came across their "Engine, Complete - Remfd" at what seems to be a VERY LOW price... Might be worth a phone call if anyone is looking for a 'new' engine.

A NAPA rebuild? I would only go for that if the dealer, metric motors and every other MB rebuilder was completely sold out.

$6700 for a factory rebuild is very reasonable. Is shipping and handling included in the price?

I wonder how much a short block would cost?

dealer in nashville charges $6400 or so for a 603 rebuilt. but then again, who rebuilt it... I thought metric does a lot of rebuilds for mercedes?
