GP relay shot, jumping the relay

my glowplug relay is shot, i took it apart and its fried, i hooked up a wire to each of the outlets that would plug into the relay and i touch the wires (well its one big twisted into one wire now) to the battery to get the car started and it starts right up. i was wondering if the car will not run the same without the relay , another thing i was wondering is can i leave the wire on the battery and drive it with the glowplugs basicly always on because after the car is started i usually take the wire off the battery then the exhaust starts smoking once i do that, or would that burn out my glow plugs? i was thinking i could run the wire to the battery and drive it that way and when i turn the car off take the wire off the battery.. what do you guys think?
