W210 Sunroof molding/seal question

When I pop up the rear of my sunroof there is some accordian looking rubber that unfolds up with the sunroof to block wind from coming in from the side (I guess). This has deteriorated on mine and is coming apart. How important is this part and does it serve another purpose, such as a water seal? My sunroof does not currently leak.

My 96 and 97 have been like that for years and it has not made a nickels wirth of difference. I thnk it is purely cosmetic to hide the mechanism. Do not worry about it. I thought about replacing mine but decided against since it appeared that the assembly had to come out to do it.

You can get them separately. They are called Bellows.. I dont have the part number here at work with me.. I dont remember what they cost, mine tore and got jammed causing the sunroof cable to kink. I would remove them or replace them.. Ok, found the part numbers in another post

MB part numbers 210-780-03-40(left) & 210-780-04-40

I would not have even noticed had a piece not fallen on my head and scared the crap out of me. After looking at them I agree with the above poster I think they are cosmetic. I think I will get up there with a razor blade and remove what I can. I don't want them to jam anything up either.

Since everyone is out looking at this can someone look at their sunroof and tell me where the 3/8" felt tape is applied? I dont open mine much and last time I did I immediately had two "streamers" following me on the freeway. By the time I got it closed and pulled over to look at it they were gone.

I helped my friend replace them on his E300D. They are simple you can take them off without removing anything. Cheap as dirt to, I think he paid like $15 each or something like that.
