Need Help
i am new to this forum. Please correct me if i have done this improperly.
This is my problem. My wife drives a 1987 300sdl and we are in a very bitter lawsuit with an ex partner. On Sept. 4. 2007 the left outer tie rod nut was removed from the tie rod end. Fortunately she was not going fast when the tie rod came loose. I have affadavits from the tire shop that did all the work, but I wonder if Mercedes has any technical data describing the nylon insert lock nut that is used on the 300 sdl series. My local mercedes dealer has so far been unable to help me. ![]() snakeeater sends. |

I have never come across anything. However they don't just fall off, never heard of one just falling off...

Agreed, I doubt it would fall off. There are torque specs, but a shop would adhere to these, that's their job. The nylon part acts as a lock.

Consider the fact that this forum sees virtually every mechanical problem that occurs on MB diesels over time. I've been here since 01 and I don't recall a single post about a tie rod nut falling off. Do a search on tie rods and see if you can find a post. If not, I'd say you have a strong prima facie case that it just doesn't happen.

Did the tire shop use Mercedes branded parts? If not then it doesn't matter what MB has to say on the matter.
How do you know the nut was removed from the tie rod on Sept 4th? How are you making the distinction between was removed, came off on its own and was never installed? Sixto 87 300D |

Had the shop not put the nut on there would have been nothing to seat the taper of the tie rod end into the steering arm and it would have dropped off before it even got out of the shop.I suppose there is no way to be sure the shop used a nylon type lock nut ,sounds to me like a tough thing to PROVE that anyone took the nut off and to PROVE that the person you suspect did it even more difficult.Get new nylock nuts put on all steering linkage use Genuine MB parts and have the mechanic that installs them give you a work order stating each nut he replaced individually and the torque that he applied when installing them.Should it happen again that will remove alot of doubts. My$.02 Don
