Oil consumption - highway vs. city driving

I have taken my 300D on several road trips over the past several months - from OKC to Colorado, Austin, TX, and St. Louis (400 - 700 miles). Car runs great - think I could get better gas mileage though - avg. around 22-23 mpg.

But, my question has to do with how much oil I use - 1 to 1 1/2 quarts per 1000 miles. Does that seem excessive? I notice no leaks, no smoking - and when I drive the car around town oil consumption is probably half this.

Any thoughts as to why the difference and what to look for?

Ryan
