started up the 83 300sd this morning, put her into "D" and nothing, tried "R" and nothing, tried everything else, nothing.
She was driving PERFECT yesterday. What could have happened? |

basics first
Check the fluid, any big puddles? Linkage fell off? How cold is it where you are? Warm up the trans and see what happens.

Broken shifter linkage...I dont know how it could go bad overnight any other way.
Unless you have ~7 quarts of red fluid mysteriously appear under your car :-)

If the transmission linkage was the problem, would the transmission brake / lock be active? because when its in park it won't roll, but in any other gear we can roll it ( like neutral )
No puddles and fluid looked a little low so I filled it up through the dip stick ; took half a quart. the tranny has not had any other issues for a year. Last edited by ARINUTS; 12-26-2007 at 11:28 PM. |

I wonder if it's possible that the pump shaft sheered. I can't say I'm familiar with Merc transmissions, yet.
Lacking proper diagnotictools like a pressure gauge, and assuming the fluid is full, I'd start by cracking a transmission cooler line and see if fluid spurts out when the motor turns. If it does, maybe some seal croaked, somewhere, or something in the valve body got hung up. Someone here must be well versed in the workings of your tranny. Hopefully they show up soon!

Well, I played with it all day today. Lifted it up and ran it in gear, the wheels spin, as soon as you put any stress on the rear wheels , it stops. the transmission is slipping. the funny thing is the last owner had the tranny rebuilt at 174,xxx, I'm only at 219,xxx now. so the second tranny lasted only 45,xxx miles as opposed to the original which lasted almost 4 times as long. and when I bought the car at 206, I had the fluid drained and filled with new. the fluid still looks clean and red.
So it looks like I need a tranny. I won't have a shop rebuild it at a crazy cost of about $2000. it's just not worth it. but I would buy a used tranny for really cheap if someone has a good one for sale. OR do a manual conversion, but its too darn cold out right now. Otherwise I have to sell the car. |

Sounds like it might be a broken band piston, possibly the B2 piston. Lots of recent threads on the subject. It can be replaced without removing the tranny.

I don't have reverse either, I thought that if it was the B2 band piston, reverse would still work.
