Loping idle with an occasional puff of blue smoke on a fully warmed up engine is a death sentence - the classic symptoms of a rod bender with bent rods. Jim

Synthetic doesn't cause leaks. It may just reveal hidden ones, those that are plugged with deposits from dino oil. Besides we're talking about your '94 car which is much less likely to leak from synthetic oil than the '83. I don't believe these cars have a mass airflow meter. Even if they do, it's definitely not a $1800 job. Something sounds fishy. I'd first try a bottle of Red Line 85 Plus or Diesel Fuel Catalyst.

I just looked at the parts catalog and I was wrong about the car not having an air mass meter/sensor. There's no price on it, but the one for a '99 E300D is $320 retail, much less if you get it online. I guess the big question is, do you have the occasional puff of smoke and idle miss, or just a minor up and down. My Jetta sometimes has a minor idle surge too and I highly doubt the rods are bent. The above-mentioned injector cleaner seems to help.

Here's what a rod-bender sounds like on its last legs.

It sounds like when you loosen one of the injector lines on a healthy diesel, resulting in that cylinder not firing.

Mine wasn't nearly as rough sounding, but it did have that loping character. I also had no holes in the pistons. Just two pistons that didn't quite reach the height the rest of them reached. And, when mine got to the point of using a quart of oil every 800 miles or so, I took it in to have what I expected to be a cylinder head refurbishment. I was stunned to hear I had bent rods. It wasn't until it started burning oil after 10,000 miles on the rebuild that I began to research the subject and found this forum.

Not all of the motors are bad, but if you roll those dice, only gamble enough that you can afford to lose.

A 140 Diesel is a great car until/unless the motor begins to burn large quantities of oil, before giving up in a great puff of smoke. Trouble is that you cannot predict which vehicles will do this and when. Hell it might never happen but it might happen next week.

Caveat emptor, my friend.
this one has a 3.0. my friend put it in, I'm selling it for the owner. new seals, rod bearings, crank bearings, turbo. pretty nice find.

I would hope it's not the #14 head. Otherwise going from a rod bender to a head cracker isn't much of an upgrade.

Needs brakes, front end work, and a/c. That's what's immediately obvious. What's not obvious might bankrupt you.

This appears to be a W-140 that went 100K without any repairs whatsoever.

Now, you get to do them.

It's worth about $4K.

I wish there were more people like you guys looking at my auction the last time I sold one of my cars. I got the impression that the longer my repair list is, the more people are put off. They just want a trouble-free car that doesn't need any maintenance, and they want it cheap.
