Defrost fix
As you might have read, none of my climate controls work. When I hit the defrost bottom I am hearing soemthing move in the vents, but no air. Anyone have an inexpensive fix for this? I will freeze all winter if I ahve to, but I need to see

Why do you want the "cheap fix" vs just plain fixing it????
![]() I guess you can buy a towel.......

I didn't get any suggestions how to fix it for real in my other post. I'm going outside to hook up the blower motor to a 12v to check it.

If your hear the flaps moving it sounds like your vacuum and climate control are working but the fan is just not running. First check the fuse and make sure power is getting to the blower motor. If the motor is getting power but not running you may be lucky and be able to fix it by changing the brushes. This has been written about quite a bit, see this thread for example W123 blower motor brushes -- any interest?. Folks have reported getting motor brushes from the local hardware store and grinding them down to fit. It's just a chunk of carbon with a wire attached to it. Otherwise a new blower motor it is.

Ive been dealing with a similar issue. I had to buy one of those crappy 12 "heaters"
It puts off just enough heat to remove condensation in a rain storm. please let me know if you get any good suggestions on diagnosis steps. ck |

I changed the fuse, and the connection looks good. The plastic backing had been melted, however.

Getting back to actually fixing it, have you verified if the blower motor is working? If the fuses and the motor are OK, the CCU is a likely suspect. Also a bad blower motor of bad aux water pump can toast the CCU, so it's possible that the both had issues. When I replaced my CCU, I also replaced my blower motor just to be safe.

Your blower fan has been drawing too many amps as it has aged, and has resulted in the melted plastic backing at the fuse. Mercedes issued a TSB for this and sells a "kit" that moves the blower fan fuse outside the main fuse box and increases its amp rating. See search for details.
Odds are, at this time, your blower motor is not good (bearings, brushes, whatever). Test it with 12v. to be sure, but a new/used blower motor fan, with some attention to the fuse situation, will probably give you some hot air. They're not real difficult to swap out. If you really want to get into it, and have a fair amount of electro-mechanical experience, they can be disassembled and repaired,...sometimes. Here's one: another: I'd look for a decent looking one, that spun freely (bring a motorcycle battery) at the wrecker's yard. Good luck ....... advice offered FWIW

This one will get the driver and passenger sides. ![]() I had to remove the fan from the Squash, remove the squirrel cage, disassemble the fan and clean the bushings and the com shaft ends. Picked up speed and lowered the amp draw. My brushes were OK, but if not it would have been easy to replace. I imagine I will have to do that soon in China as that fan barely blows in comparison. ![]()

It's time for bed so I havn't gone out and checked the blower, but I was trying to install my radio earlier and reachign around back there I was suprised by oil. So I did some searching. One guy was told his car could have been driven too long with a faulty shut off valve and oil got into the climate control vacuum lines. I have no problems at shut off.
Could this be freezing up all my climate stuff?

LOL
Matbob, I would think if that was the case, you would have oil in the ignition switch line, not sure how long, or even if it would make it to the CCU lines.

Went thru this myself. After checking/replacing everything from aux water pump, monovalve, fuses, removing and testing blower motor all with no difference, I pulled the ccu and found deteriorated solder connections where the fan speed control connects to the unit- A little soldering here and there and ten minutes later I had a fully funtioning ACC! Still have the center vent vac pods to replace but they can wait till spring.

The oil can get behind the instrument cluster by two different paths. First, if the oil pressure line lets go, you get oil everywhere, but mainly on the left side of the dash. Second, and more likely for you, the vacuum pump failed at some point, and sucked oil into the system. This is a major PITA, as it will eventually effect every line and actuator, causing deterioration of the components if not cleaned out. Are either of these keeping your blower from operating? No. Get down there with 12 volts and see if the blower works. Pull the underdash cover on the pass side, then drop the blower motor straight down and verify operation. If the blower works, replace (not rotate or visually check) the fuse. Next inspect the climate control unit for cracked solder joints. Jim
