Do a search on rod bender.

Find one that runs and enjoy.

Find one that doesn't run, drop in a 3.0 block and enjoy.

You should use a smaller signature picture, that size is quite annoying.

I'd rather buy a gas W140. The S320, more so after 1997 when the got the 722.6 trans is better in all respects. The M104 is simply a better engine for that car than the OM603.

If you don't drive much then I'd go with the S500 and enjoy the SLS rear suspension, and effortless V8 power.

I second that, you need to resize that sig picture.

Available LWB too.

So 97 S320s don't have more tranny issues than 96s or 98s? I was told to stay away from 97s because of 722.6 teething problems.

Well 1997 is the first year of the 722.6, and would probably have more problems as a result. Of course with W140's newer is better so a 1999 S320 would be the best.

I like the 722.6 a lot, you don't have to beat it with a stick to get a downshift like on the old MB gear box's. Since I like it a lot I would hunt for a MB with it, regardless of the model, W210, W140 or R129.

The 90's S-Class vehicles are the only vehicles I'd recommend that somebody choose a g@sser instead of the Diesel. An S320 would be very nice, no slower than an S350 TD and still get sane fuel economy.

If you want a 90's Diesel, I'd say skip the S-Class and go for an E300.

Doesn't matter if people like them. Only matters if you like it. Find one to test drive. Or even an S320. Personally, the W140 feels like a hotel room vs the W126 feeling like a dorm room and the W123 feeling like barracks. I'm obviously glossing over the good points of the W126 and W123, but to me the comfort and luxury of a W140 is sorely missing from my W124. Most others don't want to deal with the maintenance appetite of a W140.

If you must have a W140, go for a '99 Grand Edition.

Last, best and most exclusive of them

One thing to be aware of with the gas 6-cylinder engines is the relatively weak head gasket. Find out if it's been done recently. If not, check for obvious signs of leakage. With the V8's I'd want to know if the timing chain has been replaced in the last 100K miles. If not, time to check for stretch.

It's grand but it suffers from decontenting. Early W140s have lids on the door pockets, power remote memory inside rearview mirror, parking assist masts, etc. I read there is more vinyl and less leather in later years and other 'cheapenings' like that. Don't get me wrong, there are side airbags, optional parktronic and other goodies that make up the difference. Power remote memory inside mirror is a tough one to beat though

Anyone know if the later style ACC is connected to the memory system? I thought it was a lapse on MB's part to not recall the driver's ACC settings if everything else is recalled.

While it probably doesn't matter to most drivers I don't know that I could ever be happy with a W140 simply because of the small steering wheel. I like the old, large Mercedes steering wheels. I like being able to rest my elbows on the window sill and my other elbow on the arm rest and still hold the wheel. Couldn't do it in the S500 I test drove recently. But then to be honest they are probably out of my league in terms of maintenance costs anyway.

Those large steering wheels were designed by the Mercedes Benz engineers for precisely that purpose, so you could rest your elbows that way on long trips.

The people who complained about their size were not aware of this.
