sunroof swap hangups! oops, help!
so the sunroof of my 1982 300TD was totally rusted out in the corners where the drain hoses connect. so i pulled the sunroof out of my 300d parts car and put it side by side with the one i pulled out of my wagon. Although the one from my parts car was a power sunroof and my wagon is manual, the frame, the whole unit itself looked identical. So i installed it- which besides having my partner and I holding up the whole unit with hands and feet- was surprisingly fast and easy. Unfortunately the next day when the sun rose and i went to give the car a bath i realized the the exterior panel of the sunroof didn't sit flush with the roof of the car. OOPS. SO apparently there is a differenence between the two sunroofs. So in a power roof the motor bring the panel closed and then lifts it up into place. I'm perplexed how the manual roof allows the panel to slide into place in one motion. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas for modification of the sunroof so i can use it and have it work. I'm going to have to pull ot out again, maybe there was a slight difference in the actual rail system. But if anyone has done this before- PLEASE, I NEED YOUR HELP! I don't want to have to go buy a manual sunroof at a junkyard if i can avoid it.
BTW: when asking around to some of my fellow mercedes owners i heard that all wagons are manual and all sedans are power sunroofs. Any truth to this?? |

Sorry can't help on the differences. But on the latter question, while inductive reasoning is always suspect, my inductions support the claim that sedans are always powered and wagons always manual. I suppose it has to do with the length of the cable and location problems for the motor in the wagon.

All wagons are manual sunroofs, as there is no place for the motor. NOT all sedans are power, though. Many 240's have the manual sunroof, which I can tell you is 100% preferable to the power.
My wagon, the Squash and Scar all have manual sunroofs. China is best of all: she doesn't have one at all. {= no leaks}

A W123 is a W123, so your 2nd roof should work; electric or manual should not make a difference. Case in point: My W123 sliding roof used to be electric and I converted the same roof to manual. In your case, the problem may just be a necessary ajustment. (You do, however, have to change the side brakes and weld the angled lifts for the closing arms to the roof frame).
