Same type of wiring.

So did you somehow splice into the excite wire on the plug (that is i believe the Blue wire) this blue wire is what goes onto the smaller bolt on the alternator. In my case i just ended up cutting the plug off entirely and just putting ring terminals on the two 10 gauge wires and running them to the main post on the alternator. I also ran a heaver gauge wire to the battery. Im not sure but those wires left on the plug may go to something and stop the drain, just a guess. This is how mine is wired.

I think that you are going to have to cut off the plug because you have no junction block on the fender to run new wires to. so cut off the plug about 2 inches from the plug so if needed you can put it back on. then put ring terminals on those wires to the main plug.

The small red wire is just the blue wire extended hope that this may clear up a problem. sorry about the angle only one i could get because it was dark out.
Thanks for the lengthy post and illustration. I have been out on the car fixing and checking on car before posting again. Yes your illustration is pretty much what I have, with the exception that I do have a junction box next to battery box. My alternator wires go under the battery tray and through a large grommet in the firewall.

General
1. I checked wire connections again at alternator and they are tight.
2. I checked and cleaned all junction box connectors again and made sure they where clean and bright.
3. I found the short under the battery tray and repaired it.
4. See above post about glow plug relay.
5. See above post about wire hanging by transmission.

Tommorrow I am going to do some more checking. Thanks again.

Still plodding along.

Thanks Barry for commenting. As indicated I found at least three potential sources for my battery drain problem. The two wire problems I fixed with tape and shrink wrap, for now. The glow plug relay smells burnt, and looks bad. I am going to order a new one tomorrow AM from Mercedeshop. Phil loves to hear from me I know. What you are telling me is that there is a very strong possibility that even thought the car starts with the relay in its present condition it could still be causing a drain? Ya, the readings have been intermittent and the problem seems to be the same. I hope I am making some headway.

An addendum to the electrical issues, problem solved.

Just wanted to post an update regarding all the electrical issues I was having. The two frayed wires I found, had to have been the cause of the battery drain. It will be 1 week short of 2 months since I repaired the wires. No battery problems to date. The glow plug relay was ready to go and did die over the Christmas holidays, and was replaced. The car start fine. Thanks for all the help everyone.
