Unhappy The cars developed a new, disastrous sound

1987 300D with the OM603 3.0 turbodiesel. 200,000 miles.

Over the past month and a half, the gal when from having an odd "tock" sound every few seconds (not a knock or a tapping valve.. lifter perhaps?), to having a persistant tick. This tick speeds up with engine RPM and is there when the car is hot or cold. I can't tell where it's coming from. I run conventional rotella-t 15w40, did an oil change about 2 weeks ago. I am wondering what could be ticking loudly and what I can do to fix it.

The best way I can describe the noise is this.. When we were little, some of us may have did the whole old "card in the bicycle spoke" trick where you take a clothes pin, and clip the playing card to the frame so that when the bike tire moves, it hits the card causing a "tick". It's kind of like that but doesn't sound as cool

Any ideas?

Exhaust leak?

My 123 has one that sounds about like a card in a bike wheel.

I hope so, anything else it could be sounds like a lot of money. Could that really happen overnight though?

Broken injector line plastic clip can allow line to hit bracket, resulting in "tick".

I ran 4 cards per wheel into the spokes front and back. No doubt about it...I was way cool.

If your very careful, you can take a piece of wooden dowel and place it at various parts of the engine to zero in on the location. (other end in ear)

Could be a number of different things. Need to isolate the general area and then the parts in that area will need further discovery.

Being that this has been going on for 6 weeks or so and has changed over time tells me the issue is progressing and if it were me I would try not to use it until I knew what it was.

Good luck
Don

Start by listening very closely to the vac pump area. Buying a mechanics stethoscope might be a good idea at this point.

With a helper, have the helper put it in gear, and give it some throttle. With you standing beside the car, listen to the sound. If it gets LOUDER as well as faster, it is exhaust or heat-shield related. If not, likely lifter. An internal knock is different, unusual in anything other than the 3.5L, but always possible.

If it comes and goes with RPM, it is likely something loose rattling (the aforementioned injector line for example) and it's going to rattle loudest at its resonant frequency.

it could be quite a few things.. it could be an injector nailing or valvetrain noise an exhaust leak ( im leaning twards an exhaust leak just because it feels right)

I thought that the belt tensioner on this engine, only squeeked at initial startup but i guess it could click good point.

similiar situation

My 300SDL had developed a new sound recently.....seems to be coming from either the belt tensioner or the very FRONT cylinder; I haven't tried any of the "listening closely" methods yet. After I fix the fuel leak, I'm planning on driving the car and seeing what breaks next. Maybe the sound will get to the point where I'll be able to pinpoint the source.

Oh, wait. My old gas guzzer indie has one of those sethascopes!!! Going there this week.
